Portugal Advocates for an Integrated Approach for the Future of UN Peace Operations at UN Security Council Open Debate

On September 9, 2025, the United Nations Security Council held an open debate on The Future of Peace Operations.

Portugal took the floor in this debate to reassert its 65-year commitment to UN Peace Operations, during which it has contributed with over twenty thousand personnel. As conflicts become increasingly complex, transnational and protracted, Portugal stressed the need to ensure that UN peacekeeping remains both effective and credible, for which it highlighted three priorities to strengthening the future of UN Peace Operations: sustainability, prevention, and adaptability.

Portugal’s intervention also underscored the importance of forging strong regional partnerships – notably between the United Nations and the African Union – as well as adopting realistic and politically grounded mandates.

Reaffirming its longstanding commitment to reinforcing the role of UN Peace Operations as a cornerstone of international peace and security, Portugal also outlined its vision for an integrated approach to future UN Peace Operations, centred on the principles of prevention, partnership, and protection, which underpin Portugal’s candidacy for the Security Council, for the 2027-2028 term.
