Event “Life Below Water: Challenges Faced by Coastal Countries and Small Island Developing States”
On 27 May, the Permanent Mission of Portugal to the United Nations in Geneva organised an event at the Palais des Nations entitled ‘Life Below Water: Challenges Faced by Coastal Countries and Small Island Developing States’.
The debate focused on the impacts of sea-level rise on coastal communities and Small Island Developing States, as well as the legal challenges this reality poses. The need to strengthen international cooperation, combat the consequences of climate change and protect the communities most affected by sea-level rise was also highlighted.
In his remarks, Ambassador João Mira Gomes recalled that, for Portugal, the ocean is not a distant issue: it is part of our geography, our history, our economy and our identity, and is also a priority for Portugal’s multilateral action.
