World Maritime Day

World Maritime Day highlights the vital role of shipping in connecting people, economies and societies around the world. International shipping carries more than 80% of global trade and is essential to sustainable economic development.

Under the 2026-2027 theme, “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence”, the International Maritime Organization emphasizes the importance of turning global maritime commitments into effective action through cooperation, innovation and capacity-building.

On this World Maritime Day, we recognize the contribution of the maritime sector to safe, secure and sustainable transportation, while supporting global efforts to protect our Ocean and advance sustainable development.

Also today, in New York, the UN is holding a High-Level Meeting on Addressing the Existential Threats Posed by Sea-Level Rise, a crucial aspect for the sustainability of our planet, and in particular for Small Island Developing States (SIDS). On this World Maritime Day, Portugal calls for effective and urgent action against the existential threats posed by Sea-Level Rise.
