70 years ago, on 14 December 1955, Portugal was admitted to the UN, marking a new era for our diplomacy at multilateral level.

To celebrate this milestone, the Permanent Mission of Portugal in Geneva brought Fado to celebrate the importance of multilateralism.
We revisited the history of one of Portugal’s great musical expressions, with a universal vocation, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

In Portugal, Fado is the song of the people. Its lyrics reflect everyday struggles and victories, pain and happiness, the universal issues of human existence but also speaks of the importance of cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue. It speaks of coming together, of looking at the world from different angles, of building communities and bridges through the richness of diversity, and respect for one another, always.

Since 1955, we brought to the organization our identity as a Southern Euro-Atlantic country whose geographic position and history are unique.

We are a country from the “North”, but we breath the “South”.

At the event we were honoured by the presence and warm words of H.E. Ms. Tatiana Valovaya, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva, who confessed to being a fan of Fado.]
