CPLP Underscores the Importance of a Strong and Credible UN General Assembly Amid Geopolitical Tensions
During discussions on the General Assembly Revitalization, Portugal delivered a statement on behalf of the Community of Portuguese‑Speaking Countries (CPLP), emphasizing that, at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions, a strong, efficient, and credible UN General Assembly (UNGA) is indispensable for safeguarding and reinforcing multilateralism.
The CPLP underlined that revitalization efforts must be more than procedural adjustments, they must deliver tangible impact. This includes the improvement of working methods to ensure greater transparency, coherence, and effectiveness. The Community also called for the consistent respect for the UN Charter, including its Article 27.3, according to which no party to a dispute should simultaneously act as judge in its own cause, as a foundation for institutional coherence and trust among Member States. Finally, it highlighted the need for a renewed focus on ensuring that the UNGA provides real value added in addressing global challenges.
As the United Nations celebrates its 80th anniversary, the CPLP reaffirmed that a revitalized, an empowered General Assembly remains central to a rules‑based international order and to the collective capacity of Member States to advance peace, sustainable development, and human dignity.
