Caribbean Delegation Visits Portugal for Study Tour on Geothermal Energy

Portugal hosted a Caribbean delegation on 14 April as part of a study visit focused on the energy sector, with particular emphasis on geothermal energy.

The visit, which included Lisbon and the Azores, brought together representatives from five Eastern Caribbean countries – Dominica, Grenada, Saint Lucia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines – as well as representatives of regional organizations, including the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).

In Lisbon, the participants met with the Secretary of State for Energy. Discussions focused on energy resilience, energy sovereignty, and the development of renewable energy. The Secretary of State shared Portugal’s experience in these areas, highlighting the country’s response to last year’s blackout originating in Spain, the severe impact of this winter’s storms on the national electricity grid, and the measures being taken to strengthen energy resilience and adapt to climate change.

The initiative was implemented by FIAP – Fundación para la Internacionalización de las Administraciones Públicas and CCF – Caribbean Cooperation Facility, under the Global Gateway project, with the support of the European Union Mission in Barbados.
