Portugal Calls for Immediate Humanitarian Action in Gaza at UN Security Council Open Debate
The United Nations Security Council held an open debate on the “Situation in the Middle East”, addressing the urgent humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the broader challenges to peace and stability in the region.
Portugal called for the immediate resumption of UN-led humanitarian operations in Gaza and reaffirmed its support for UNRWA’s essential work in assisting vulnerable communities.
In this context, it stressed the need for swift and coordinated action to alleviate suffering, recalling that Portugal joined a letter signed by 25 Foreign Ministers, urging an immediate and decisive response to the humanitarian emergency and reinforcing the call for a ceasefire.
Looking beyond the emergency response, Portugal reiterated its longstanding commitment to a comprehensive and lasting peace based on the Two-State Solution, emphasizing that dialogue, respect for international law, and multilateral engagement are indispensable to achieving security and dignity for both Palestinians and Israelis.
