Portugal Highlights Solidarity and Long Term Disaster Risk Reduction Efforts at UNDP Briefing on Mozambique Floods

During a UNDP briefing on the recent floods in Mozambique, Portugal outlined three key messages, reaffirming its solidarity with the people of Mozambique, describing its concrete humanitarian support, and defending its commitment to long‑term resilience building.

Portugal expressed solidarity with Mozambique, its Government and people, noting that the devastating floods are part of a global increase of frequent and severe climate‑related disasters, which also recently affected the centre of Portugal.

Portugal also described the extent and quantity of humanitarian assistance it already provided to Mozambique, including through the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the World Food Programme (WFP), but also more recent contributions via ReliefEU. This support contributes to immediate relief efforts by providing food, shelter, medical consultations and other types of essential items and services.

Finally, Portugal stressed the importance of drafting long‑term investment and development cooperation strategies which focus on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and preparedness. Recalling the most recent technical visit to Mozambique of a technical team of experts hailing from Portugal’s development cooperation agency (Camões) and the Islamic Bank for Development, Portugal highlighted the value of triangular cooperation in this regard.

Portugal reiterated that it remains fully committed to working alongside Mozambique and other international partners to promote effective humanitarian responses and long‑term resilience investments in the face of escalating climate challenges.
