Portugal Launches Campaign for UN Security Council Seat in New York
After first announcing it in January 2013, Portugal officially launched its campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2027–2028 term, during a high-profile event in New York on 8 November led by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Paulo Rangel. The candidacy, under the slogan “Prevent, Partner, Protect”, positions Portugal as a committed advocate for peace, multilateralism, and global cooperation.
Portugal’s Strategic Vision
In his remarks, Minister Paulo Rangel emphasized Portugal’s unique role as a bridge-builder across continents, highlighting its Atlantic and maritime vocation and strong ties with Africa, Latin America and Asia.
The minister stressed that Portugal’s candidacy is rooted in its long-standing commitment to multilateralism, international law, and peacekeeping. Over the past 65 years, Portugal has contributed more than 20,000 personnel to UN peacekeeping missions, reinforcing its credibility as a trusted partner in global security.
Diplomatic Engagement
The campaign launch marked the start of an intensive diplomatic effort ahead of the elections scheduled for June 2026, during the 80th UN General Assembly. Portugal will compete for one of two seats allocated to the Western European and Others Group, facing Austria and Germany.
Portugal has previously served on the Security Council three times (1979–1980, 1997–1998, and 2011–2012). Returning to the Council at a time of global geopolitical shifts would put Portugal’s bridge-building abilities at the service of the UN membership.
