Portugal Puts Youth at the Heart of Peace and Security

Portugal’s Permanent Representative to the UN joined an Ambassadorial meeting of the Group of Champions of Youth, Peace, and Security, to reiterate Portugal’s support to the YPS Agenda and Youth meaningful participation.

Portugal stands firmly committed to advancing youth leadership in global peace and security efforts. Our support for the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2250 on Youth, Peace, and Security, which recognizes the valuable role young people play in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and post-conflict reconstruction, is solid.

Ambassador Rui Vinhas reiterated that our most recent resolution on “Policies and Programmes involving Youth” – presented at the UN General Assembly together with Cabo Verde and Kazakhstan – is an opportunity to strengthen the institutional framework regarding the YPS Agenda.

The Youth, Peace, and Security Agenda is a critical framework that calls for the recognition of youth as key stakeholders in building lasting peace. Portugal, together with the international community, continues to advocate for the YPS Agenda to be implemented at the local, national, and international levels. As such, Portugal suggested that YPS be highlighted during HLPF, the dialogues with candidates for the position of Secretary-General, the upcoming peacebuilding week and sustained that the next report of the Secretary-General on the theme should be discussed in the Security Council by the means of a formal open debate, rather than an Arria Formula meeting.
