Portugal at the NPT Review Conference
During the general debate of the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non‑Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), Portugal’s Deputy Minister for Defence Policy, Nuno Pinheiro Torres, underlined that History recalls the devastating potential of nuclear weapons.
Portugal reaffirmed that the NPT remains the cornerstone of the global nuclear disarmament and non‑proliferation architecture and stressed the need to preserve and strengthen the Treaty.
In times of strategic rivalry and eroding trust, where the risks of miscalculation are on the rise, it is crucial that NPT States Parties agree on commitments to improve transparency, accountability and verifiability in the nuclear field, working towards a consensual outcome that is balanced across the Treaty’s three pillars.
