UNSC Open Debate on Children and Armed Conflict: Portugal Highlights Three Key Priorities for Child Protection
On 25 June, the United Nations Security Council held an Open Debate on “Children and Armed Conflict”, marking the 20th anniversary of Resolution 1612, which established the Monitoring and Reporting Mechanism to protect children affected by war. The session brought together Member States, UN officials, and civil society representatives to assess progress and reinforce commitments to end grave violations against children.
The SG Special Representative on Children and Armed Conflict underlined the increase (+25%) of serious violations against children between 2023 and 2024, as a result of an increase of violence and humanitarian crises.
Portugal actively participated in the debate, reaffirming its dedication to protecting children in conflict situations and outlining three key priorities:
- Uphold international law and ratify key instruments;
- Ensure accountability and treat child soldiers as victims;
- Strengthen protection and reintegration measures.
Discussions emphasized the need for robust international cooperation and adequate resources to implement child protection frameworks effectively.
