Portugal Participates in UN Security Council Debate on Small Arms
On 10 November 2025, Portugal took part in the UN Security Council Open Debate on Small Arms and Light Weapons, held at UN Headquarters in New York.
In its statement, Portugal stressed three key points:
- The proliferation of small arms — including through emerging technologies such as 3D printing — remains a serious threat to international peace and security, notably in regions like the Sahel and Haiti.
- The United Nations already has mechanisms to address this challenge, such as the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) and the UN Trust Facility Supporting Cooperation on Arms Regulation (UNSCAR).
- Greater cooperation between States is essential to curb illicit flows and prevent armed violence.
