Portugal reaffirms commitment to Two-State Solution at key UN Conferences

Portugal has strengthened its role as a staunch advocate for peace in the Middle East through active participation in two major United Nations conferences dedicated to the implementation of the Two-State Solution.

On September 23rd, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa addressed the high-level conference on the Two-State Solution at UN Headquarters in New York, reaffirming Portugal’s unwavering support for a just and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians. In his remarks, the President announced Portugal’s formal recognition of the State of Palestine, stressing that the Two-State Solution remains the only viable path to stability and coexistence. He called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, full humanitarian access, and the unconditional release of hostages, underscoring the need to uphold international law and protect civilians. This decisive step followed Portugal’s earlier engagement at a previous session of the High-Level International Conference, held in July. At that meeting, Portugal joined 15 other nations in a joint declaration expressing readiness to recognise Palestine and outlining measures to rebuild Gaza, disarm Hamas, and ensure its exclusion from future governance structures. The declaration also urged an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian assistance, reinforcing the international community’s commitment to peace and security.
