High Level Dialogue: Strengthening the Resilience of Telecommunication Submarine Cables
During the 2025 WSIS+20 High-Level Event, organized in Geneva by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the UN Development Programme (UNDP), and the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Portugal organized, together with the Nigeria and the ITU a high-level dialogue on the resilience of submarine cables.
The session brought together Ministerial participants, regulators, and leaders in the technical and private sector to discuss ways of ensuring the safety of these critical infrastructures through which 99% of global Internet communications are carried.
Professor Sandra Maximiano, President of the Portuguese telecom regulator ANACOM and co-chair of the International Advisory Body on Submarine Cable Resilience, stressed Portugal’s commitment to the resilience of submarine cables – which play a fundamental role in the global economy, development, peace, and stability.
