UN Independent Expert Muluka-Anne Miti-Drummond’s visit to Portugal: Advancing Human Rights for Persons with Albinism
Between 17 and 26 November, Portugal received a visit from the United Nations Independent Expert on the enjoyment of human rights by persons with albinism, Ms. Muluka-Anne Miti-Drummond, under the Standing Invitation that the country maintains to the Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council. This invitation reflects Portugal’s firm and ongoing commitment to international scrutiny and to the effective promotion and protection of human rights.
During the visit, the Expert met with various national authorities, civil society representatives, and persons with albinism, with the aim of gaining an in-depth understanding of the legal framework as well as the practices and realities affecting this group.
The visit culminated with the Expert’s participation in the 44th plenary meeting of the National Human Rights Committee (CNDH), an interministerial coordination body responsible for ensuring a coordinated approach to human rights, where she presented her conclusions and preliminary recommendations.
At the end of the meeting, the Independent Expert and the representative of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights joined the members of the CNDH for a group photograph, marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
