Portugal Reaffirms Strong Commitment to UN Peacekeeping at the C34 Session

At the beginning of the Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations (C34) 2026 session, Portugal reiterated that UN peacekeeping remains one of the Organization’s most visible and cost‑effective tools for maintaining international peace and security.

Portugal advocated for an integral approach grounded in 3 Ps Prevention, Partnership and Protection. These principles are essential to ensuring peacekeeping missions are capable of delivering meaningful impact on the ground.

During the session, Portugal stressed several priorities for strengthening UN peacekeeping:

  • Clear and achievable mandates, tailored to realities on the ground;
  • Sustainable and predictable financing to enable missions to plan and operate effectively;
  • Enhanced safety and security of peacekeepers, whose work often takes place in highly volatile environments;
  • Consistent political follow-up is essential to ensure measurable progress and better prepare well-defined and responsible exit strategies.

Portugal reaffirmed that peacekeeping remains a cornerstone of the multilateral system and that reinforcing its effectiveness is vital for advancing international peace and security. The country expressed its readiness to continue working with partners across the UN membership to ensure that peacekeeping operations deliver real and lasting impact.
