COP 30 - Portugal Champions Renewable Energy and Climate Finance in Brazil

Portugal congratulates Brasil for the outcome of the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) held from 10 to 21 November in Belém do Pará, at the heart of the Amazon, which brought together delegations from over 190 countries

According to the Portuguese Minister for Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho: “Portugal was a country of solutions, cooperation, and ambition at COP30“.

Portugal arrived in Belém with an updated and ambitious National Energy and Climate Plan (PNEC 2030), reinforcing its long-term commitment to emissions reduction and decarbonization. Portugal also emphasized the importance of global solidarity, just transition and international support mechanisms, notably reiterating its support to conversion of debt into climate action, as in the case of Cape Verde — a model to be replicated with São Tomé and Príncipe.

According to Maria da Graça Carvalho, “COP30 allowed us to take concrete steps in a particularly difficult international context. Portugal actively contributed to essential decisions – from the “Mutirão” to the global adaptation indicators – ensuring the Paris Agreement is still alive, operational, and oriented toward the 1.5°C ceiling“.During the Leader’s Summit prior to COP30, the Portuguese Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, was the first European Union country to pledge a financial contribution to the Tropical Forest Forever Facility.
