UN Security Council Open Debate: Portugal Reaffirms Commitment to Multilateralism and Peaceful Dispute Resolution
The United Nations Security Council held an open debate on July 22, 2025, under the theme “Multilateralism and Peaceful Settlement of Disputes”, addressing the importance of dialogue and cooperation in safeguarding international peace and security.
The debate, which gathered Member States, UN officials, and regional organizations, sought to explore ways to strengthen multilateralism and reinforce mechanisms for dispute settlement.
The Portuguese Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Ana Isabel Xavier, took the floor to underscore Portugal’s steadfast commitment to diplomacy, mediation, and prevention — which constitute core pillars of its foreign policy. As expressed, these principles are essential for building trust and resolving conflicts through peaceful means.
Reaffirming that multilateralism remains indispensable for a stable and peaceful world, Portugal voiced its commitment to contribute to advancing international cooperation, including as a candidate to the UN Security Council, for the 2027-2028 term.
