Portugal champions North-South dialogue in the promotion of Human Rights

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa reaffirmed Portugal’s commitment to promoting human rights, democracy and the rule of law through inclusive multilateral dialogue, in a meeting with Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset, during a visit to Strasbourg, on January 20th.

As host country of the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe, Portugal stands by the Centre’s role as a key platform for dialogue with countries of the Global South, fostering cooperation, mutual understanding and shared responsibility in addressing global human rights challenges.

The visit coincided with the 50th anniversary of Portugal’s accession to the Council of Europe, underscoring the country’s long-standing commitment to multilateral cooperation and its support for the Organisation’s core values.
