Portugal at the International Law Year in Review Conference
Patrícia Galvão Teles, Director-General of the Directorate-General for European and International Law of Portugal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Member of the UN International Law Commission participated on 22 January in a panel in Singapore that discussed the achievements in 2025 for International Law and Multilateralism.
The International Law Year in Review Conference, organized annually by the Centre for International Law (CIL) of the National University of Singapore (NUS), proved once again that International Law continues to grow stronger against all odds.
3 success stories were shared as a vibrant testament to this reality:
• the adoption of the Final Report of the ILC Study Group on Sea-Level Rise in relation to International Law; Professor Patrícia Galvão Teles presented its main conclusions;
• the BBNJ Agreement’s milestone of 60 ratifications on 19 September 2025, allowing the entry into force of this High Seas Treaty on 17 January 2026;
• the adoption of the Pandemic Treaty on 20 May 2025.
An excellent omen with the hope that in 2026 the reinforcement of International Law can continue to support peace and address global challenges.
