Portugal participates in UNSC Open debate on Practicing Multilateralism, Reforming and Improving Global Governance

Portugal participated in the United Nations Security Council Open Debate on “Practising Multilateralism, Reforming and Improving Global Governance”, held in New York on 18 February 2025. Chaired by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi as the signature event of China’s presidency and featuring a briefing by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the meeting convened high-level representatives to address pressing global challenges and provided a key platform to advance a more effective and inclusive international system.

In its intervention, Portugal reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to multilateralism and a rules-based international order, stressing that global challenges demand collective solutions grounded in dialogue and cooperation. Highlighting the Pact for the Future as a roadmap for comprehensive UN reform, Portugal underscored the need to strengthen the Security Council, tackle emerging threats and enhance coordination across UN bodies.

Closing its statement, Portugal emphasised:

“As we approach the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, Portugal remains convinced that multilateralism works. Through dialogue and cooperation, we can overcome divisions and make UN reform, albeit challenging, a reality.”
