Portugal Marks UN Milestones Through PNHRC Dialogue on Human Rights
On 12 December, the Portuguese National Human Rights Committee (PNHRC) held its 45th Plenary Meeting at the Thalia Theatre in Lisbon in an extended format with the participation of civil society.
The event brought together institutional, academic, operational, and civil society perspectives, underscoring the Committee’s commitment to openness and fostering a broad, inclusive exchange on the issues under discussion.
Speakers reflected on two important milestones: 70 years of Portugal’s membership in the United Nations and the 25th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325. Discussions centred on Portugal’s role within the UN, the country’s contribution to protecting and promoting human rights, and its engagement in the Women, Peace and Security agenda – with particular emphasis on women’s leadership in peacebuilding and conflict prevention.
Taking place shortly after the International Human Rights Day, the meeting also served as a moment to underline the relevance of multilateral cooperation and the defence of human rights in the current global context. Against this backdrop, the session recalled Portugal’s determination to strengthen dialogue, cooperation, and support for multilateral institutions. It also evoked the spirit in which Portugal is presenting its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2027-2028 term – a candidacy grounded in the conviction that there can be no lasting peace and security without the protection and promotion of human rights, a core pillar of Portugal’s external action. These principles should continue to shape Portugal’s voice and actions on the global stage.
The PNHRC extends its appreciation to all participants, speakers, and moderators for their valuable contributions to a rich and inspiring discussion, reaffirming a shared commitment to human rights, gender equality, and multilateralism.
